Home - Home Burkina Faso Blog Mongolia Blog A Change of P(l)ace Hatshepsut Temple January 2013 About me My name is Susan. My husband Maurie and I met in graduate schoool at the University of Victoria in British Columbia and in 1989 we moved to to Chelsea Quebec. Adrian was born the same year and Ariel in 1994. Following a heroic battle with brain cancer Maurie died in 2006. Adrian graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from Queen's University and is working in St. John's, Newfoundland. Ariel is studying Urbanisme at UQAM in Monteal. On January 31, 2013 I left my job of 20 years as a commercial litigator and on Feburary 17, 2013 I moved to Léo Burkina Faso for a year to volunteer with Uniterra (CECI) as legal counsel to Fédération Nununa. I stayed with Nununa until the end of March 2014 at which time I took on another Uniterra mandate with a Burkinabè association of suppliers of goods and services to the mining industry (ABSM) in Ouagadougou. I returned to Canada at the end of February 2015 and on November 21, 2015 I started a six month mandate with Uniterra (WUSC) in Mongolia. About Burkina Faso Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta) is a landlocked country in West Africa which gained independence from France in 1960. It is a parliamentary republic headed by President Blaise Compaore since October 15, 1987. Burkina Faso has a population of approximately 17 milllion and a GDP per capita of $1,303 compared to $38,290 in Canada (IMF 2009). The country relies heavily on cotton and gold exports for revenue. About 90% of the population is engaged in subsistence agriculture, the main cash crop is cotton. In late October 2014 a democratic insurrection deposed the country's President Blaise Compaore who was replaced by a transition government headed by a civilian. An attempted coup d'etat by the former head of Compoare's Presidential Guard was foiled in September 2015 and elections are scheduled for November 29, 2015. The courage of the burkinabé people and their commitment to democracy sets an example for the rest of Africa and the whole world. About Mongolia Mongolia is a landlocked country bordered by Russia to the north and China to the south. In 1206 Genghis Khan founded the Mongol Empire and his grandson Kublai Khan conquered China to establish the Yuan dynasty. Following the collapse of the Yuan, the Mongols pretty much kept to themselves. In the 16th century Tibetan Buddhism spread and Mongolia was eventually absorbed by the Qing dynasty founded by the Manchu. Following the collapse of the Qing dynasty in 1911 Mongolia declared its independence but struggled (with help from the Soviet Union) until 1921 to establish its independence from the Republic of China (PRC). In 1924 the Mongolian People's Republic was declared as a Soviet satellite state. Congruent with the collapse of the Soviet Union, Mongolia's democratic revolution in early 1990 led to the establishment of a parliamentary republic, multi-party system, a new constituion (1992) and a transition to a market economy. At 1.5 million square km and a population of 3 million, Mongolia is the 19th largest and one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. Half of its population lives in the capital Ulaanbaatar. The country has little arable land, dominated by grassy steppe with mountains to the north and west and the Gobi Desert to the south. About 30% of the population are nomadic or semi-nomadic and horse culture remains important. Economic activity is traditionally based on herding and agriculture (16% of GDP) although mining (copper, coal, molybdenum, tin, tunsten and gold) is increasingly important (22% of GDP, 80% of exports). In 2006 68% of Mongolia"s exports went to the PRC which supplied 30% of Mongolia's imports.
